Ex-OpenAI chief scientist raises $1B for startup with only 10 employees

Safe Superintelligence reportedly raised the funds at a valuation of $5 billion.

Ilya Sutskever, co-founder and former chief scientist for OpenAI, has reportedly raised a billion dollars for his artificial intelligence startup against a perceived value of $5 billion.

The company, Safe Superintelligence Inc. (SSI), announced the funding in a Sep. 4 update to its website. Per SSI, it raised $1 billion from NFDG, a16z, Sequoia, DST Global, and SV Angel.

As Cointelegraph recently reported, Sutskever and engineer Dan Levy left OpenAI in June 2024, less than a year after Sutskever formed the firm’s “Superalignment” safety team. While Sutskever, at the time, said he was leaving to pursue other opportunities, other former employees have hinted at disagreements between CEO Sam Altman and other members of the firm and its board.
